Panel – On the Importance of Feminist Alliances in the Digital Space

SETI is a platform aiming at promoting successful initiatives of African woman and its diaspora. It aims in particular at highlighting women of talents who are impacting their communities and beyond. The motto is to share, support each other and grow!

 

Biography :

Born in Senegal, raised in Côte d’Ivoire and throughout her numerous travels, Hawa likes to describe herself as an hybrid African. She is the founder of SETI, a platform promoting women of talent from Africa and its diaspora. She now lives in the beautiful city of Vienna where she works for an international organization, designs and implements projects for youth and women employment in West Africa. Always on the move and curious about the world, she doesn’t miss any opportunity to connect with people and learn from others. A story lover, she is particularly excited to share with you inspirational backgrounds, motivational quotes and self-growth tips. Finally she loves to bring together women from different walks of life through meetups, workshops and talks. Her motto is share, support each other and grow!

    Even in the digital space, the public is not experienced in the same way by everybody:Racially distorted algorithms and search results, language translation programs that are subject to bias or stereotypes and much more. Intersectional feminist net politics criticizes these discriminatory structures and creates awareness and sensitization for the existing unequal conditions in the digital space, which are closely intertwined with real life. The panel discussion deals with the question of creating a counter-public. In recent years, hashtags and blogs in particular have proven to be effective tools for feminist actors to use digital media. The focus lies also on large areas of feminist internet politics, such as access to the internet, access to content, copyright and data protection. In the panel discussion international experts and activists will discuss how these existing structures can be deconstructed and replaced by new, progressive and equal systems.
